NEBO Tempest 500 Lantern
I've stumbled around enough dark marinas and unlit boat decks to know that most lanterns are either too bulky, too dim, or too dead when you need them. The NEBO Tempest 500 is none of those things.
This little tube — barely 3.7 inches tall and about 1.25 inches across — packs 500 lumens and nine light modes into something smaller than a soda can. You get 360° and 120° lantern settings in both white and red, plus a built-in spotlight. The red mode is a legitimate night-vision saver at the helm when you're checking charts or scanning the cockpit. Battery life ranges from 3.5 hours on full blast to a staggering 96 hours in eco mode, rechargeable via USB-C. We used it for evening ghost crab hunts during a week on the beach and never once needed to top it off.
It's IPX7 waterproof, magnetic-based, and comes with folding hooks and a lanyard — hang it, stick it, clip it. I've dropped it on the deck multiple times. Still works, still looks fine. It sticks firmly on a vertical steel surface, but can be more easily dislodged from stainless steel.
My one gripe: there's no direct access to individual modes. You have to cycle through every setting to reach the one you want. It's like scrolling through TV channels to get back to ESPN. Annoying, not fatal.
